Appliance repair tips

DK Appliance Repair recommends you some tips to keep your appliances running smoothly.

Refrigerator repair tips:

• Many refrigerators have open coils at the back of unit. Clean these coils early and often, at a minimum every six weeks. If you have pets, like dogs that shed, you'll want to clean the coils more often. This will allow the refrigerator to breathe better and prolong the life span of the unit.

• Have an odor in your refrigerator? Put a bowl in the refrigerator and freezer section filled with either coffee grounds, charcoal briquettes, or good old baking soda.

Use your refrigerator more wisely. New and improved refrigerators use less electricity than older models. You can save energy by using your existing refrigerators more wisely and by investing in modern Energy Star approved refrigerators. Refrigerators use the most energy of any home appliance. Here are some tips for efficient refrigerator use:

  • Place refrigerators out of direct sunlight and away from the stove and other heat-producing appliances;
  • Decide what features you really need and use. Through-the-door features like cold water or automatic ice dispensers can increase electricity usage by as much as 20 per cent compared to similar models without these extras;
  • Buy an Energy Star approved refrigerator;
  • If you buy a new refrigerator, unplug your old one. There is no energy efficiency in continuing to use your energy guzzler;
  • Find cold storage spaces to store fresh foods safely without using any electricity.

Freezer repair tips:

• When purchasing a freezer, think non-defrosting first. Not only are they less expensive, but they will keep food better, allow food to last longer, lessen the frost bite on your food, and they use less electricity.

Washer repair tips:

• Washing your clothes in cold water saves on energy and lowers your utility bills. Cold water also works best to lift out tough stains on treated pre-treated clothes.

• Don't overload the washing machine expecting to get more done in less time. It actually makes the washer work harder and leaves your clothes less clean.

Dryer repair tips:

• Always be sure to clean the dryer filter after every use. This will allow the dryer to breathe better which will in turn allow your clothes to dryer faster.

Use your washer and dryer more wisely. New and improved washers and dryers use less electricity than older models. You can save energy by using your existing washers and dryers more wisely and by investing in modern Energy Star washers and dryers. Energy Star dishwashers use 25 per cent less energy than other new models! Energy Star designated washers are a wise investment for several reasons: They clean clothes using 50 per cent less energy than standard machines; Full-sized Energy Star washers use 72-100 litres of water per load, while their standard counterparts use 160 litres; and Energy Star washers extract more water from clothes during spin cycles, reducing drying time and saving energy and wear-and-tear on your clothes.

Front-loading tumble washers, use an average 104 litres of water per load, while top-loaders use 160 litres. Front-loading machines also use a third less water, a third less heat energy and a third less detergent!

  • Clothes washers are more efficient when operated with full loads.
  • Wash clothes in cold water yes, they will still get clean!
  • Use environmentally safe detergents and whiteners that are kind to aquatic life and your clothes.

Clothes dryers don't have Energy Guide labels on them because the energy efficiency of different models are essentially the same. But not all clothes dryers are created equally.

Learn more about dryers features and functions that make them more energy efficient. Look for clothes dryers with moisture sensors that automatically stop drying when they sense a load is dry enough.

Or better still, don't use a dryer where possible. Go old school and make use of the sun's warmth and wind to dry your clothes on a line outside. Or if that's not possible where you live, use a drying rack indoors to allow your laundry to dry in the warmth of a room or in a sunny window. You'll be surprised how quickly most clothes can air dry without the use of a dryer!

Oven repair tips:

• After your oven tells you it is done preheating, let it preheat for another 5 to 7 minutes. Here's why: The oven sensor heats up and signals the oven to shut off the preheat cycle. The oven inner walls however are still not hot enough and will keep on absorbing the heat, thus lowering the temperature inside the oven. By preheating the oven for an extra 5 minutes you will help keep the heat inside the oven nice and even.

• Do not use the self cleaning cycle on or before a major holiday like Easter. The oven may overheat and damage a key component such as the fuse or the main control board.

Dishwasher repair tips:

• To keep your dishwasher running smoothly and working longer, run the dishwasher once a week even if there are no dishes to be done.

• After every cycle, clean out the filters and any debris in the cutlery basket. Remove and rinse through. If they are blocked it will impair the machine's performance.

Use your dishwasher more wisely. New and improved dishwashers use less electricity than older models. You can save energy by using your existing dishwashers more wisely and by investing in modern Energy Star dishwashers. Energy Star dishwashers use 25 per cent less energy than other new models! Here are some other energy-saving tips:

  • Always run your dishwasher with a full load. Most of the energy used by a dishwasher is spent heating water, and since you can't decrease the amount of water used per cycle, filling your machine is more effective than running half-loads;
  • Use the air-dry option instead of the heat-dry, rinse-hold and pre-rinse features. If your dishwasher doesn't have this option, prop the door open after the final rinse cycle to dry your dishes.

BBQ repair tips:

• To keep your barbeque clean in the outside elements it is strongly recommended that you invest in a cover for the barbeque to protect it from dust, moisture and rust.

• Keep gas cylinders off the ground to prevent rusting. Comply with federal and state regulations governing the use and storage of propane cylinders.

Garbage Disposal repair tips:

• Keep your garbage disposal clean and the blades sharp by running 30 to 40 ice cubes down the disposal while running water. Doing this once a week will give you best results.

• • •

• Replace your current appliances with New Energy Star models. New Energy Star models will run more efficiently saving you money on your energy bills and reduce green house gases which helps benefit the environment.

• When purchasing new appliances, do your homework. Research and learn about the various types of appliances available. Choose appliances that will best meet your cooking, food storage, and cleaning needs in your home.

• However, if something did happen, then, be persistent about attempting repairs!
